With spring right around the corner, you’re probably getting excited about riding your motorcycle on the open roads again. But you may need to take some steps to ensure your bike is ready to go. Keep reading for some tips on preparing your motorcycle for the springtime. Check for Pests

If your motorcycle has been in storage or sat idle this winter, you need to inspect it for any critters. The cooler weather can draw insects into warmer, dryer spots and this includes your bike. Check the exhaust pipe, cover, luggage compartments, and more.

Give it a Good Cleaning

It’s also a good idea to clean your motorcycle this spring. Give it a good wash and get off all of the grime that may have accumulated during storage. You’ll feel fresh and clean when you hit the road under the sun!

The Battery

If you disconnected your battery and connected it to a battery tender during the winter, it should still have a charge. Connect the battery back up and you’ll be good to go! If you left your battery on your motorcycle, it’s probably drained. Charge it up again and you’ll be ready to ride on the open roads. Make sure to check the leads for corrosion.

Fluids

Now it’s time to inspect your bike’s fluids. Begin with the oil. Be wary of black or sludgy oil as well as oil with metallic flecks in it. This may be a sign you need to get professional service since there could be some internal damage. Next, check the brake fluids and top them off if they’re low.

Tires

Storing your motorcycle can be tough on your tires. Before you hit the road this spring, make sure to check your tire pressure. The air pressure should be the owner’s manual suggested levels. Next, check the tread and sidewalls. The tread should be even and there should be no cracks to the sidewalls.

Brakes

Finally, it’s time to make sure your brakes are still in good condition. Roll out of your driveway and give yourself some space to brake before you hit the next stop sign. Apply half pressure to feel if the brakes are engaging, then apply a little bit more until you reach a complete stop. There should be no grinding or slipping, but some squeaking is normal.

These are just a few of the steps you can take to prepare your motorcycle for a spring full of thrills! If you want some more tips, contact CalMoto. We are located in Mountain View and Livermore, California and proudly serve San Francisco and San Jose. It’s time to get on a bike that makes this spring one to remember!
